What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a thorough and comprehensive medical system. Having been practiced in Asia for thousands of years, it has more recently been adopted by other cultures around the world and is currently the fastest growing health care system worldwide. Even with the rapid advancement of medical science, TCM is being integrated into Western Culture as more and more people realize the benefits of this safe and effective medicine.
TCM combines the strengths of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, nutritional theory, energetic exercises, and mindfulness to address disease and imbalances in the body. The scientific concept of homeostasis, or the body’s ability to maintain a stable internal equilibrium, is similar to the important concept of yin/yang harmony and balance in TCM.
How does acupuncture work?
It relies on your body’s ability to be in balance. Acupuncture works with an energetic model that includes the idea that Qi is flowing through a series of Meridians, or Channels throughout the body. When normal flow is disrupted due to disease or injury, particular points on the body are stimulated in order to use the body’s own energy to restore normal function.
What about herbal medicine?
Chinese herbs function in a similar way to acupuncture, and the two are often used together in treatment. Herbs can be combined into a customized formula, specific for each individual. When single herbs are combined together, there is a powerful, synergistic effect. Daniel uses only safe, well tested herbs that meet GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) standards as determined by the Food and Drug Administration.
What is a holistic approach to medicine?
The TCM approach does not look at disease or injury as an isolated part of the body. The approach is always focused on the whole person, understanding that everything is connected. In this model, we are able to recognize that each individual has his/her own unique story. Often there are clues in one’s story that may provide insight into the root of an illness. It is always the root, or underlying condition, that we are aiming to treat. This method of healing is effective in treating disease and injury, as well as maintaining optimum health and preventing future illness. It is effective for physical, psychological and emotional issues.
